Madeira Island trek
Discover Madeira through an incredible island-crossing trek that leads you across rugged mountain ridges, deep valleys, and lush laurel forests. Follow ancient levadas, reach the island’s highest peaks — like Pico do Arieiro (1,818 m) and Pico Ruivo — and enjoy breathtaking coastal views. Each day offers a new perspective of this Atlantic island, combining adventure, raw nature, and local culture.
Difficulty Level: 3+/5 – Challenging
This trek is demanding and best suited for active travelers with good fitness levels. Expect long hiking days (4–8 hours), steep ascents and descents, and some exposed mountain trails. Weather conditions can very quickly, adding to the adventure.

Day 1 – Arrival in Madeira Island
This is the day you arrive in Madeira, a real pearl in the middle of the Atlantic. For nature lovers who like to get to know a place by following the trails in search of the best landscapes, you’ve come to the right place.
We don’t have any activities scheduled for this day, but if you need to plan something or want some tips, we’ll be happy to help.
Transfer from the airport to the hotel

Day 2- Walking Levada do Caniçal, Boca do Risco, Fonduras, Portela and Santo da Serra
The day begins with a briefing with our Guide who will accompany you throughout this adventure.
Then it’s time to get going.
A day that will be marked by the slopes and cliffs, between forest, levadas and viewpoints that make us see the island of Madeira from a different perspective.
It will be the first day of walking, contemplating and enjoying.
During this day we will walk approximately 07 hours and 30 min, 21 km, with a gradient = + 700 m / – 250 m

Day 3 – Walking Pico do Arieiro – Pico Ruivo – Caldeirão verde – Queimadas
If the weather is fine, the day will start with the sun rising over the peak of Arieiro, and believe me, this image will last forever.
It will be one of the days when we join the heart of the mountain, the waterfalls and the levadas that wind through the mountains to carry the water to the Atlantic.
A day of contrasting colors, where you’ll walk with one foot in the clouds and the other in the Atlantic.
It will be a day of breathtaking landscapes.
The island of Madeira has a challenging orography but it is one of the most beautiful in the world, believe me.
This is the day you’ll be able to walk with your feet in the clouds and the Atlantic on the horizon, it’ll be an adventure that will win you over from the very first minute.
We’ll cross paths with the highest peaks on this island and conquer them.
During this day we will walk approximately 07 hours, 19 km, with a gradient = + 400 m / – 1300 m

Day 4 – Walking Achada do Teixeira a Encumeada
Between the Laurisilva forest and the mountain slopes, we’ll follow this day’s trail.
This will be the day when you’ll feel like you’re in the center of the island.
You’ll be walking in a living forest hundreds of years old.
This type of forest is a World Heritage Site.
Today you’ll also have the chance to see all the mountain features in the center of the island.
During this day we will walk approximately 06 hours, 14 km, at a gradient = + 550 m / – 1100 m

Day 5 – Walking Encumeada – Bica da Cana – Pico Ruivo do Paul
The views from the Bica da Cana viewpoint leave no one indifferent.
From its 1580 meters, the views of the São Vicente valley are breathtaking.
During this day we will walk approximately 06 hours, 15 km, with a gradient = + 600 m / – 300 .

Day 6 – Walking Assoubiadores – Fanal – Levada dos Cedros
This will be the day of the enchanted forest, there is no place in the world like Fanal, we will cross the green patch belonging to the indigenous Laurisilva forest.
But because the shades of green on this day are unique, we’ll follow the Levada dos Cedros, one of the oldest on the island.
For lovers of nature in shades of green, this is a day you won’t forget.
During this day we will walk approximately 06 hours, 30 minutes, 17 km, with a gradient of + 300 m / – 550 meters.

Day 7, Canyoning and Funchal Visit
On this day, the trail will be along the Cidrão river.
What an epic place for a two-hour canyoning adventure.
On a route where you can make eight rappels and the highest waterfall reaches 15 meters high, you’ll also have the chance to have fun on the natural slides that the stream has.
This place in the heart of the mountain is one of the best places to experience canyoning.
You’ll also have a free afternoon to wander the streets of Funchal and sample the fine Madeira wine.

Madeira Island Trek (Guided 8-Day Hiking Adventure)
What type of trip is this?
This is an Guided hiking trip across Madeira Island. You’ll hike from the mountains to the ocean, following spectacular trails, always accompanied by a certified mountain guide.
During this week, you will also have the opportunity to visit the beautiful city of Funchal and enjoy a canyoning experience.
How many people are in the group?
We keep our groups small – maximum 8 travelers – to ensure a personal experience, safety, and better connection with nature.
How difficult is the trekking?
This program is rated Level 3 – Moderate. You should feel comfortable walking 4–6 hours per day on mountain trails with some elevation gain. No technical climbing skills are required.
How difficult is canyoning ?
Level 1 ,is an introductory activity, ideal for beginners and families, which requires no previous experience and includes abseiling (up to 10 metres), optional jumps into natural pools and rock slides.

All nights are spent in comfortable 3 star hotels, carefully selected for location, hospitality, and authenticity.

Weather ?
Madeira enjoys a subtropical climate with warm summers and mild winters, and sunshine for most of the year. The driest and warmest months are from June to September, while the rainier period runs from October to April.
The south and coastal areas tend to be sunnier, but cooler temperatures, fog, or low clouds are common inland and in the higher peaks — so it’s important to come prepared for all kinds of weather.
Mountain weather can change quickly.
Rain, wind, and chilly conditions are possible at any time of year, especially above 1500 m. The best approach is to pack smart — bring layers, sunscreen, and a good rain jacket.
Your guide will monitor the weather throughout the trip and may suggest alternative routes to ensure the group’s safety and comfort if the conditions turn bad.
