Madeira Island Trek

Madeira Island

Picture yourself embarking on a trekking journey that spans the entire island from end to end; it’s not just seen, it’s felt. This adventure is tailored for those seeking a one-of-a-kind and unforgettable experience.

Step away from the comfort and routine of everyday life and dive into a world untouched by civilization.

With each step, you are enveloped by lush nature, surrounded by majestic mountains that soar into the sky.

The steep trails pose a challenge, but the rewards are immeasurable. Follow the “levadas” — unique irrigation channels that crisscross the island, guiding you through a verdant maze. Accompanied by the gentle sound of flowing waters, you will snake through exotic vegetation and centuries-old enchanted forests, enjoying breathtaking panoramic views.

Every turn unveils a new natural spectacle, a living painting that captivates your senses. The ancient paths, carved into the mountain slopes, challenge you with rugged topography. As you ascend, your heart races and your muscles work in harmony, but reaching the summit rewards you with stunning panoramas where the ocean meets the sky and the breeze caresses your skin.

Feel what it’s like to walk in the clouds with your feet in the Atlantic. The Madeira Island Crossing reveals the power of nature and our own resilience. It’s a profound experience, a blend of challenge and beauty, deeply touching those who venture on this journey.

Prepare to create memories that will last a lifetime. Embark on this unforgettable adventure and walk with those who know, as we explore the secrets of this magical island. Over the course of a week, live a grand adventure in a place that is a true treasure for nature walkers. And with Madeira’s abundant water and “levadas”, we won’t just stick to the trails; we’ll follow cascades and walk through streams.

A canyoning adventure awaits us.

Madeira Island trek

Discover Madeira through an incredible island-crossing trek that leads you across rugged mountain ridges, deep valleys, and lush laurel forests. Follow ancient levadas, reach the island’s highest peaks — like Pico do Arieiro (1,818 m) and Pico Ruivo — and enjoy breathtaking coastal views. Each day offers a new perspective of this Atlantic island, combining adventure, raw nature, and local culture.
Difficulty Level: 3+/5 – Challenging
This trek is demanding and best suited for active travelers with good fitness levels. Expect long hiking days (4–8 hours), steep ascents and descents, and some exposed mountain trails. Weather conditions can very quickly, adding to the adventure.

Madeira enjoys a subtropical climate with warm summers and mild winters, and sunshine for most of the year. The driest and warmest months are from June to September, while the rainier period runs from October to April.
The south and coastal areas tend to be sunnier, but cooler temperatures, fog, or low clouds are common inland and in the higher peaks — so it’s important to come prepared for all kinds of weather.

Mountain weather can change quickly.

Rain, wind, and chilly conditions are possible at any time of year, especially above 1500 m. The best approach is to pack smart — bring layers, sunscreen, and a good rain jacket.
Your guide will monitor the weather throughout the trip and may suggest alternative routes to ensure the group’s safety and comfort if the conditions turn bad.
